The Debate - Will they survive and does it matter? Including Senator Larissa Waters.
Queensland has no shortage of threatened species with close to 800 listed under State legislation and over 400 scheduled under Commonwealth legislation. In recent years there have been many changes to Queensland’s natural landscapes coupled with amendments to the legislative framework that aims to protect threatened species. How will these changes affect threatened species and does it matter? The EIANZ is hosting a one day event on the subject of threatened species to discuss:
Program
9.00-9.10 | Welcome | Vicki Low, President EIANZ-SEQ |
9.10-9.40 | Changes in threatened species conservation industry, with specific focus on policy / legislation change over the last two decades and the impact on industry. What does is mean for proponents trying to develop? |

14.45-15.15 | A legal perspective - why protecting species is important | Jo Bragg |
15.15-15.45 | Afternoon Tea
15.45-17.00 | Debate - The recovery, or at least ongoing survival, of threatened species requires considerable financial inputs. Quite often iconic species such as the northern hairy nosed wombat draw greater funding than less glamorous species. Is this the right approach? No matter the level of funding are some species destine for extinction? Has the time come to triage our threatened species? The proposal to triage threatened species is a controversial shift from the long held approach of aiming to preserve all species. Our debate will focus on this radical new way of thinking and consider the pros and cons of triaging threatened species. |
Speakers: Senator Larissa Waters, Paul Donatiu, Geoff Lundie-Jenkins, Michael Bode |
17.00-17.05 | Event Close
17.05-18.00 | Networking Drinks |
