On World Environment Day 2024, we were pleased to share the communiqué developed from our inaugural Nature Positive Cities Symposium earlier this year.
The symposium heard that centring nature in our cities has significant health, social and economic benefits. Creating nature positive cities is also essential to addressing the challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
EIANZ therefore calls on policy makers and regulators to make these issues central to policy and decision-making on urban planning, and recognise that developing nature positive cities requires striving for Biodiversity Net Gain.
This year's World Environment Day themes include land restoration and drought resilience - bringing nature back to our cities is part of the solution.
Our thanks to the NPCS Technical Committee for preparing this important document.
We acknowledge and value the rights and interests of Indigenous Peoples in the protection and management of environmental values through their involvement in decisions and processes, and the application of traditional Indigenous knowledge.
