We were saddened this week to hear that Simon Hudson passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning at home with devoted wife Memento by his side. Simon and Mem have been long-standing members of the EIANZ community and many people know them from their time in many locations including Sydney, Far North Queensland, Brisbane and most recently, Melbourne. The love and support for Simon and Mem from the EIANZ community was evident at a fundraiser to help with Simon’s treatment held two years ago in Brisbane.
Simon was held in great esteem by friends and colleagues alike. He will be remembered as a great environmental practitioner with a passion for good science, ethical practice and, of course, lizards! He was an excellent communicator and teacher, and whether he was mentoring young professionals in the workplace, standing at the front of a lecture theatre or passing on choice snippets of knowledge at 4am at the Pyrmont Bridge Hotel, he inspired the next generation to achieve great things, and to do so with a smile.
Over the last two years, as it was described by one of their friends this week, Mem has dealt with the immense challenges they have faced with remarkable tenderness, humour and courage. The world would be a better place with more people like Simon and Mem.
Our thoughts are with Mem, their family, friends and colleagues at this time, and we raise a glass to Simon. A memorial event will be held tomorrow in Melbourne.
We acknowledge and value the rights and interests of Indigenous Peoples in the protection and management of environmental values through their involvement in decisions and processes, and the application of traditional Indigenous knowledge.
