World Oceans Day is a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future. Events were held on June 8. This year's theme was 'Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet' and individuals and organisations across the planet took action for prevention of plastic pollution in our ocean.
There were several suggested actions including:
Reef Ecologic hosted a World Ocean Day event on Magnetic Island focussing on Reef Recovery. They shared knowledge about the reef and its issues and solutions with university students, industry and the community. University students produced a video, which included their pledges for change to improve sustainability and the health of the reef.
We acknowledge and value the rights and interests of Indigenous Peoples in the protection and management of environmental values through their involvement in decisions and processes, and the application of traditional Indigenous knowledge.
